eBay Now to offer same-day shipping from local stores, launching iOS beta in San Francisco

eBay Now to offer sameday shipping from local stores, launching beta in San Francisco

Need something today, but can't bother yourself with a trip to the store? Apparently, there's going to be an app for that -- at least in San Francisco. Local eBay users have started receiving beta invites for eBay Now, an iOS app that will allow shoppers to pick up items from local stores without leaving the house. eBay is offering beta users $15 off of their first order and free same-day delivery for their first three. Orders will come with a $5 delivery charge once the freebies are used up, forcing users to weigh the value of their time against the frustrations of local parking. The service is only available in San Francisco at the moment, but feel free to hit up the source link below to toss your name in the Beta raffle bucket anyway.

Heat, humidity no sweat for some exercisers | Epou

By Doug Gulasy Published: Wednesday, August 1, 2012, 8:55?p.m. Updated 12 hours ago

Dan Bogesdorfer can?t help it ? he enjoys running in the heat.

?I actually try to push myself the hotter that it gets,? said Bogesdorfer, 43, of Monroeville, who works at the University of Pittsburgh. his route takes him through East Liberty, where he sees ?a big sign that tells you how hot it is that day.

?When it hits 95, I know I?ve hit my goal and I?m running through the hottest day so far this year.?

Bogesdorfer, who runs in the late morning or early afternoon, has had plenty of chances to achieve his goal this summer.

Through the end of July, the temperature had reached 90 degrees or above 18 times in Pittsburgh this year, according to the National Weather Service ? matching the total for all of 2011.

The weather service says is predicting a 50 percent chance that August, typically muggy, will have higher temperatures than normal. Normal high temperatures are 82 at the beginning of the month and 80 at the end.

?Expect higher than that,? said Lee Hendricks, a meteorologist for the weather service in Moon.

Bogesdorfer, who served in the Army for seven years after high school and now runs 20 to 30 miles a week, said he rarely sees others ouside exercising when he does.

?If I do, I say: ?You?re one of the crazy ones, huh?? ? he said.

Bogesdorfer?s lack of company is probably a good thing, according to local doctors. Although some people like and know how to handle extreme heat, most recreational athletes should alter their workout routines when the weather gets especially hot and humid.

?I know that the lunchtime workout is a very popular thing, but in the summer, that?s not necessarily the wisest idea because that?s when the sun is at its hottest,? said Moira Davenport, doctor of emergency medicine and sports medicine at Allegheny General Hospital and an avid runner herself. ?It?s that much harder to maintain any effective cooling at that point.?

Medical professionals say people should do whatever they can to stay cool when working out ? change exercise times to mornings before 9 a.m. and evenings after 7 p.m.; work out indoors instead of outdoors; wear clothing that wicks away moisture; and make sure to stay hydrated before, during and after workouts.

Doing so can keep dangerous heat illnesses ? dehydration, exhaustion, stroke and more ? at bay, they said.

Most importantly, people should realize their body has limits.

?If you start having heat cramps, that?s the time to shut it down,? said Ron DeAngelo, director of sports performance training at the UPMC Center for Sports Medicine.

?You can?t really work through those. you can stop and stretch as you normally would, but when you have heat cramps, if it?s progressed to that point, you?ve got to shut it down, get into a cool area and hydrate.?

He said a heat index ? which combines heat and humidity considerations ? of 85 is around the point at which people ought to pay special attention to how their body is reacting and make changes. When the heat index hits 95, people should work out inside or not at all.

People who are overweight, just undertaking a fitness program or who have had previous heat-related illnesses are most at risk for trouble, DeAngelo said.

Local officials and gyms say they have noticed an overall difference in people?s activities this summer in response to the heat.

Gary Pinkerton, Butler County?s director of parks and recreation, said he?s noticed more people exercising at the county?s Alameda Park early in the morning. a lot of them stick to the shaded paths, he said.

?Even in a lot of the local parks that I?ve been to because we?re doing projects in them, you see the walkers and joggers earlier in the day than you normally would simply because of the heat,? Pinkerton said. ?But I don?t think it?s affected the number of people that still go out and participate in those activities.?

As expected, people also are packing the county?s Alameda Pool in greater numbers than normal. However, one of its biggest amenities ? the pool is heated ? isn?t necessary this summer.

?We?re saving a few dollars this year,? Pinkerton said.

Upper St. Clair has both indoor and outdoor pools at its community recreation center, along with an indoor track, workout machines, two gymnasiums and a group exercise room.

Bobby Davenport, fitness supervisor at the center, said the pools ? particularly the indoor lap-lane pool ? have had the greatest usage this summer.

Even gyms, which typically get less attendance in the summer, have plenty of business this summer.

?In 100-degree heat, or 90-degree heat with a 105-degree heat index, there?s only so much you can do outside without risking dehydration,? said Mike Reicherter, manager at Fitness Factory in Shadyside. ?Especially older people or people with pre-existing conditions. so we?ve had a pretty busy summer.?

DeAngelo said the biggest ?X-factor? this summer has been the increased humidity ? making it more difficult for a person?s sweat to evaporate and thus making it more difficult to stay cool while exercising.

He advises people either to work out inside or not at all when the heat index reaches 95 degrees, particularly if they?re not used to exercising.

Davenport said most people who exercise regularly will still find a way to do it in extreme summer conditions, but they need to take the necessary precautions.

?It?s just the little things that people (can) do,? she said. ?There?s a whole bunch of different variables that you can change to actually make it safer and more comfortable to exercise in this weather.?

Roger GoodellAP

Not that anyone expected him to change his mind, but NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell was firm Saturday, insisting the Saints operated a pay-to-injure program.

Goodell spoke to a small group of reporters including Jeff Duncan of the New Orleans Times-Picayune while at a Pee Wee football event in Akron, and said the evidence he gathered made it clear there was a bounty system and a clear plan to cover it up.

?Well, the No. 1 thing is when you reward players for injuring other opponents, that?s a bounty,? Goodell said. ?That?s not pay for performance, that?s a bounty. And that?s what the players and, I believe, [Saints linebackers] Coach [Joe] Vitt said occurred. And that?s what our evidence indicates. So when you?re doing that, anything that would target or reward people for injuring other players, that?s not part of football. ?That?s not what we?re teaching these kids, and it?s not what we?re going to do in the NFL.?

Goodell denied that the Saints and the league are involved in a stand-off that comes down to definitions, saying that terms such as ?cart-offs? and ?whacks? are clear.

?That?s not semantics,? Goodell said. ?They understand the rules. When you reward somebody for injuring somebody ? and the only way you cart off somebody is when they?re injured. So that?s an injury. So when you do that, that?s not semantics.?

?We also have evidence that players were targeted, as we?ve indicated to you all and told you.?

Goodell said the league also has more evidence than has been shared with the media so far, and that the Saints could have mitigated some of the damage if they have cooperated with the initial investigation after the 2009 season.

?Sure, the fact that they said it didn?t happen and they continued to do it is certainly a big issue,? Goodell said.

Goodell?s in Ohio for today?s Hall of Fame ceremony, and said he had no plans to meet with Saints players or coaches prior to tomorrow?s Hall of Fame Game, since he?s leaving town tonight.

White House says jobs data shows economy recovering

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The White House said on Friday that data showing U.S. hiring increased in July showed the economy was continuing to recover, and stressed the jobless rate was "essentially unchanged" despite its rise from 8.2 percent to 8.3 percent.

"Today's employment report provides further evidence that the U.S. economy is continuing to recover from the worst downturn since the Great Depression," Alan Krueger, chairman of the White House Council of Economic Advisers, said in a statement.

He also noted that although the unemployment rate ticked up, "more precisely, the rate rose from 8.217 percent in June to 8.254 in July." President Barack Obama, who is running for re-election in November, is under pressure to convince voters his policies are helping the economy.

How to Encourage Preschoolers at Home | Toddler Times

Preschool 1024x815 12 Things Your Child will Learn in Preschool and How to Encourage them from HomePreschool is a wonderful learning time for your toddler.

So many new friends will be made and a host of new skills will be acquired.Looking back at the end of the year, you?ll be so surprised at all of the changes your child has gone through.

But what exactly will they be doing in the classroom? And how can you as a parent encourage their learning from home?

I?ve rounded up 12 important things your child will learn and included tips for encouraging them. Here?s to a great year of preschool!

  • thumbs 01 12 Things Your Child will Learn in Preschool and How to Encourage them from Home

    Social Skills

Of all the skills children learn in a preschool environment, how to interact with peers is among the most important. At this age they learn primarily through play, exploring how to have their needs met and how to meet the needs of others around them.

At home tip: You can help support your toddler as he learns social skills by playing family, playing with dolls and other toys, and by modeling appropriate behavior. Remember, siblings are peers too!

    How to Sit Still

Structured preschool environments condition children to wait their turns, listen when being spoken to, and at times, sit still for brief periods. These skills help them learn appropriate ways to behave in other environments, most notably, kindergarten and grade school.

At home tip: Play "circle time" with your child. Invite him to sit on the carpet and listen as you read a short book, and to interact with you while sitting calmly. Positive reinforcement goes a long way at this age so remember to praise your child.

    Gross Motor Skills

Improving gross motor skills like jumping, climbing, and catching objects is an important task of the toddler years. In preschool your child will dance, play physical games, and spend time on the playground which will all improve her coordination and physical abilities.

At home tip: play games with your child, such as asking him to see how many hops it takes to get from one end of the hallway to the other, or simply to catch balls of different sizes in the backyard.

    Counting Objects and Number Concepts

These are the skills that lay the foundation for mathematics. In preschool your child will learn to count and begin to understand groups and number patterns.

At home tip:You can support learning at home by asking him to sort items by color or size, using manipulatives in play, and working with patterns.

    Increasing Independence

Preschool allows your child to experience a world separate from family life. In the classroom he'll be given responsibilities such as being the "class helper" for the day, which will increase confidence.

At home tip: Allow you child to make some decisions for herself, like selecting clothing. Ask your child to help you with household tasks, like setting the table or bringing her dirty clothes to the laundry room.

    Letter Recognition

Letter recognition is a critical part of encouraging literacy.

At home tip: Help prepare your child for reading by asking her to trace letters of the alphabet with her finger, or plan activities around a letter of the day theme. The learning possibilities are endless!

    Conflict Resolution

Conflict resolution is a critical part of social skills. In preschool your child will be encouraged to work out problems with other children, and use appropriate behavior to get needs met. Your child will learn to find acceptable solutions for everyone, and to apologize when necessary.

At home tip: It's the parent's job to model conflict resolution to children. When problems arise between siblings or friends at home, use the opportunity to have your child offer potential solutions instead of simply directing the children. You might be surprised by what they come up with!

How to be Part of a Group

Toddlers learn about working together in preschool through cooperative play, art projects and more. It helps them understand that each member of a team can make important contributions.

At home tip: Help your child understand the value of teamwork by doing activities together as a family, such as puzzles or even community service.

How to Follow One and Two Step Directions

Preschool teachers give children simple instructions that boost their self esteem and confidence. By age 2, your child should be able to understand instructions such as "Put the crayons away and find a seat at the table." These types of instructions help prepare children for kindergarten.

At home tip: Work with your toddler on following one and two step instructions, and remember to praise her for following through!

That Doing Things Differently is Ok

Each child comes to preschool with his own background and ways of doing things. It's a great place to learn that being different and doing things in different ways is a good thing!

At home tip: In addition to talking to your child about diversity, show him alternate ways to accomplish tasks through play.

Understanding the Mobile Customer The Angel Voice

Analytics on mobile customers

In our last post, we outlined how businesses can approach defining the mobile customer experience for their organization. However, regardless of how businesses and customer care professionals specify what should comprise the mobile customer experience (CX), the effort will be wasted if the business has yet to define their mobile customer.

As organizations consider how to weave mobile into their CX strategy, customer care leaders need to create a clear picture of who their customers are and what their expectations are in order to build a mobile strategy that will meet and even exceed the customers? needs.

For example, customer care teams should examine how the customer base usually interacts with the business throughout the entire lifecycle ? and what characteristics are specific to the mobile customer. A few questions that can help with this customer analysis are:

  • Are there core questions mobile customers usually ask?
  • Are there certain services, products or content that are accessed more than others via mobile devices?
  • What are the usual customer issues that can be solved through automation?
  • What issues consistently require a customer service representative?
  • Do customers need support at the beginning or a few months after purchasing the company?s product / service?
  • Is there a certain stage of the customer lifecycle when more support is usually needed?

Answering questions like these can both create a personalized connection between the business and customer and also ensure the final mobile solution leads to a successful CX.

Additionally, leveraging analytics and examining past customer data to identify key trends and behaviors can give companies valuable insight into the specific months, weeks or even time of day customers are likely to request support and what that support requires. With this information on hand, businesses can better allocate resources and incorporate the appropriate features to ensure each customer has an ideal mobile experience.

By understanding customer preferences, anticipating their needs and respecting their time with a company?s product or service, businesses are able to better allocate research and development to update features for future releases. This brings them closer to achieving a complete mobile CX strategy that truly puts the customer first.

Next week, we?ll take a look at how to build a customer experience bill of rights, but as always, please let us know if you have any tips on how businesses can understand their mobile customer!
