Detectives in New York are searching for a female suspect who fled a subway station after a man was fatally pushed in front of a train on an elevated platform in Queens, N.Y.
At 8:04 p.m. on Thursday an unnamed male passenger was standing on the northbound platform of the 40th Street and Queens Blvd. in Queens, waiting for the 7 train. Witnesses told police that a woman was walking back and forth on the platform and talking to herself before she took a seat on a wooden bench on the platform.
As the 7 train approached the station, witnesses said the woman rose from the bench and pushed the man, who was standing with his back to her.
"They said that [she] pushed somebody to the tracks," Jiovanni Briones, who owns restaurant across the street from the station, told WABC. "Who knows, maybe it was a fight?"
Witnesses told police that the victim did not notice the woman behind him. He was struck by the first of the 11-car train, with his body pinned under the front of the second car as the train came to a stop, according to a statement from Deputy Commissioner Paul Brown.
After pushing the man onto the platform the woman then fled down two separate stair cases to Queens Blvd. She was described as wearing a blue, white and grey ski jacket, and grey and red Nike sneakers.
It is unclear if the two knew each other, or whether anyone on the platform attempted to help the man off the platform before he was struck by the train.
Police said that there was no video of the incident or suspect from the station itself, but detectives are now canvassing locations along Queens Blvd for witnesses and surveillance video.
Thursday's death marks the second incident this month of a man being killed after being pushed onto subway tracks and killed by an oncoming train.
On Dec. 3, 58-year-old Ki-Suck Han was tossed onto the subway track at 49th Street and Seventh Avenue around 12:30 p.m. after an altercation with a man who was later identified as 30-year-old Naeem Davis. Davis has been charged with murder in Han's death and was ordered held without bail.
The video below from Rozetked purports to show a "rendering" of Samsung's forthcoming Galaxy S4 smartphone, which is poised to leapfrog the iPhone 5 when it comes out next year.
(Translation: The phone and features in the video are not actually the S4).
There are two cool features in the video:
First, the phone is thin and the screen is big. Many of those who own iPhones secretly covet the larger screens on Samsung phones, and this screen is big. And the rendered phone is thinner than the iPhone 5.
Second, the phone includes a "projected keyboard" feature in which the phone projects an image of a keyboard on a flat surface and then allows the user to type on the projected keys. If that is real and it works, that will be cool. Much cooler than carrying around an external keyboard.
The real Galaxy S4 is expected to come out early next year. The fear of many Apple fans is that, now that Samsung has basically caught up with Apple on the smartphone front--the Galaxy S3 is an excellent phone that some people prefer to the iPhone--this new phone will vault past the iPhone 5 and leave Apple scrambling to catch up.
Back in 2010 I had the greatest Chablis of my life: Chablis Premier Cru Fourchaume ?Vignoble de Vaulorent? 2007 from Fevre. I had a bottle on Christmas eve and it remains the greatest Chablis I?ve tried in my life. My comments in the previous note still pretty much apply, only this was more complex and subtle, without losing any of the vibrant energy or classy life. It is just the complete Chablis experience.
I was rather surprised that a wine of this fulgurating quality was bottled with a composite cork. This may have implications for it?s long term storage, I suppose, which is a bit of a shame as this is clearly a Chablis with a glorious life ahead of it. But you don?t need to wait, it shows everything at five years old with style and ?lan, throbbing with quality and bursting with style. If, like my associate Mr P (who is open-minded enough to call me Davy), you are fortunate enough to own a case of this I?d really start drinking. He has promised to pop a bottle when I meet him in April ? if I was that kind of person I?d be wetting myself in anticipation.
So you must be thinking this insanely fine Chablis will set you back an arm and a leg from some merchant who requires your first-ranked teddy bear as deposit. Not so! You can get it for ?29 a bottle from The Wine Society. In these enlightened times greater bargains are rarely found. I may go and score myself another couple of bottles right now.
We drank this coruscating Chablis with a chicken from the supplier of the best chickens I?ve eaten on a regular basis ? Beechcroft Direct. Here?s the bird: If?I am brutally honest, I overcooked?the?chicken just a little; something I?very rarely do
No?such problems with The Editor?s goose fat roast potatoes!
He cooks the best roast potatoes I have eaten, when my meat/oven requirements allow for perfection, and no one else even comes close. Sorry Linda.
So it?s been a happy few days in Elitistreview Towers, we have drank well although not excessively, and eaten appallingly brilliantly. Nothing matched that ?29 Chablis, though!
WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama will meet with congressional leaders at the White House on Friday in search of a compromise to avoid a year-end "fiscal cliff" of across-the-board tax increases and deep spending cuts.
The development capped a day of growing urgency. Obama returned early from a Hawaiian vacation while lawmakers snarled across a partisan divide, leaders in each party blaming the other for an episode of government gridlock that threatens the economy with a new recession.
Adding to the woes confronting the middle class was a pending spike of $2 per gallon or more in milk prices if lawmakers failed to pass farm legislation by year's end.
Four days before the deadline, the White House disputed reports that Obama was sending lawmakers a scaled-down plan to avoid the fiscal cliff of tax increases and spending cuts.
Administration officials confirmed the Friday meeting at the White House in a bare-bones announcement that said the president would "host a meeting."
A spokesman for House Speaker John Boehner quickly issued a statement that said the Ohio Republican would attend and "continue to stress that the House has already passed legislation to avert the entire fiscal cliff and now the Senate must act."
Top Senate leaders said they remain ready to seek a last-minute agreement. Yet there was no legislation pending and no sign of negotiations in either the House or the Senate on a bill to prevent the tax hikes and spending cuts that economists say could send the economy into a recession.
Far from conciliatory, the rhetoric was confrontational and at times unusually personal.
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., accused House Speaker John Boehner of running a dictatorship, citing his refusal to call a vote on legislation to keep taxes steady for most while letting them rise at upper incomes. The bill "would pass overwhelmingly," Reid predicted, and said the Ohio Republican won't change his mind because he fears it might cost him re-election as speaker when the new Congress convenes next week.
Boehner seems "to care more about keeping his speakership than keeping the nation on a firm financial footing," he said in remarks on the Senate floor.
A few hours later, McConnell expressed frustration and blamed the standoff on Obama and the Democrats. "Republicans have bent over backwards. We stepped way, way out of our comfort zone," he said, referring to GOP offers to accept higher tax rates on some taxpayers.
"We wanted an agreement, but we had no takers. The phone never rang, and so here we are five days from the new year and we might finally start talking," McConnell said.
Still, he warned: "Republicans aren't about to write a blank check for anything the Democrats put forward just because we find ourselves at the edge of the cliff."
Brendan Buck, a spokesman for Boehner, responded in a similar vein to Reid's comments. "Harry Reid should talk less and legislate more if he wants to avert the fiscal cliff. The House has already passed legislation to do so," he said, referring to a measure that extends existing cuts at all income levels.
Addressing the GOP rank and file by conference call, Boehner said the next move is up to the Senate, which has yet to act on House-passed bills to retain expiring tax cuts at all income levels and replace across-the-board spending cuts with targeted savings aimed largely at social programs.
"The House will take this action on whatever the Senate can pass - but the Senate must act," he said, according to a participant in the call.
Boehner told Republican lawmakers the House would convene on Sunday evening. Rep. Tom Cole, R-Okla., an ally of the speaker, quoted him as having said "he didn't really intend to put on the floor something that would pass with all the Democratic votes and few of the Republican votes."
The risk of higher milk prices stems from the possibility that existing farm programs will expire at year's end, and neither chamber of Congress has scheduled a vote on even a temporary extension to prevent a spike. There have been unverified estimates that the cost to consumers of a gallon of milk could double without action by Congress.
The president flew home from Hawaii overnight after speaking with top congressional leaders.
Before leaving the White House last Friday, the president had called on lawmakers to pass scaled-down legislation that prevents tax increases for the middle class, raises rates at upper incomes and renews expiring unemployment benefits for the long-term jobless. He said he still supports a more sweeping measure to include spending cuts to reduce deficits, but said they could wait until the new year.
That capped an unpredictable week in which Boehner pivoted away from comprehensive deficit reduction talks with Obama to an aborted attempt to push legislation through the House that retained existing tax levels except above $1 million. Anti-tax Republicans rebelled at raising rates on million-dollar earners, and Boehner backpedaled and canceled the planned vote.
Without congressional action, current tax rates will expire on Dec. 31, resulting in a $536 billion tax increase over a decade that would touch nearly all Americans. In addition, the military and other federal departments would have to begin absorbing about $110 billion in spending cuts.
Failure to avoid the "fiscal cliff" doesn't necessarily mean tax increases and spending cuts would become permanent, since the new Congress could pass legislation cancelling them retroactively after it begins its work next year.
But gridlock through the end of the year would mark a sour beginning to a two-year extension of divided government that resulted from last month's elections in which Obama won a new term and Republicans retained their majority in the House.
The tax issue in particular has been Obama's first test of muscle after his re-election in November. He ran for a new term calling for higher taxes on the wealthy, and postelection public opinion polls show continued support for his position.
Boehner's decision to support higher rates on million-dollar earners marked a significant break with long-standing GOP orthodoxy, but the resistance among his rank and file so far has trumped him as well as any mandate the president claims.

Any chance of seeing such a functionality implemented in the sample editor ? I tried It-alien's Morpher tool but it won't work with single-cycle waveforms for instance. Anybody else interested in this ?

I'd love to mix different samples beyond just layering two sounds. But how does the sample morphing work? Is it a spectral analysis the gives a timbral mix like vocoding, an envelope analysis that matches attack and sustain from one sample to another or a signal convolution?
