Last week, City of Laredo Mayor Raul G. Salinas and the Laredo City Council had a busy day, with various proclamations and recognizing outstanding individuals in the Laredo community.

?Mayor Salinas first welcomed representatives from the Border Mental Health Mental Retardation clinic, to help point out that opportunities for citizens with intellectual and developmental disabilities to function as independently and productively as possible must be fostered in our community by providing full access to education, housing, employment, and recreational activities.? With that, he proclaimed the month National Intellectual and Development Disabilities Awareness Month in Laredo.

?At the start of the City Council meeting, Mayor Salinas recognized Dr. Joaquin Cigarroa for his 60 years of medical service to the Laredo Community.? Surrounded by Dr. Cigarroa?s family, Mayor Salinas also proclaimed the day Dr. Joaquin Cigarroa Day in Laredo, citing him as an example of hard work, discipline, intelligence, medical integrity and a professional pioneer, highlighting his most outstanding and lasting accomplishment is his marriage to his beautiful wife Barbara Flores Cigarroa, and the 10 children they raised, who are all also making an impact in various medical, legal, engineering and other professional endeavors, in Laredo, Texas and throughout the United States.

??Additionally, Mayor Salinas and the Laredo City Council recognized the ?United High School Cheerleaders for winning UCA National High School Cheerleading & World Championship in Orlando, Florida on February 11, 2012.

They also recognized Yesenia Carrera of Cigarroa High School for winning the 2011-2012 State Powerlifting Championship-Class 5A, 132.5 Weight Class.

Later, Carlos Vedarte of United South High School was also recognized for achieving All-State 5-A Academic Team honorable mention/first team all-district and all-city receiver for football.

Finally, the players/representatives of the Lyndon B. Johnson High School 2011-2012 Football Team, ?The Wolfpack-The Jewel of the South,? were recognized for being the first team in its 9 year school history to have a winning record in its participation in Varsity Athletics.
