Seriously: What's the Hold Up on a Fiscal Cliff Deal?

We've been batting around this fiscal cliff debate for months, and now with just a couple days left until the deadline, senators say they remain "apart on some pretty big issues." The Senate remains divided on Sunday night, well past the 3 p.m. deadline that Senate Majority Leader and his Republican counterpart Mitch McConnell had set for negotiations. The upper house will reconvene at 11 a.m. on Monday to discuss the so far irreconcilable differences between the two parties' visions for how the nation can avoid what's been described as an economic disaster.

RELATED: Did Boehner Deep-Six the Payroll Tax Deal?

What are these differences, though? And what's it going to take to get come to an agreement? There is no simple answer to that question, but there are a series of hypotheses that will help you better understand what the heck is going on in Washington.

RELATED: Obama Backs 'Gang of Six' and McConnell Backup Debt Plan

Before we get into that, though, let's just reiterate that there will be?some very unwelcome consequences?if?Congress can't come to an agreement about averting the fiscal cliff. Taxes will rise for pretty much everyone. Spending will be cut across the board and affect everything from national defense to healthcare. Worst of all, the nation could tumble into another recession. Pretty bad! What issues are so important then that our well heeled lawmakers on Capitol Hill can't come to an agreement?

RELATED: Boehner Declares GOP Victory But Still Faces Tough Math

Tax Hikes for the Wealthy

RELATED: Desperation (Not Deal-Making) Takes Hold in Debt Talks

This is a big one. You might remember a week or so ago, when House Speaker John Boehner and Barack Obama were tossing numbers back and forth about the threshold for taxing the wealthy. That is, at what point do we start raise taxes on the wealthiest of Americans to help cover the costs of running the nation. After much in-fighting, the Republicans have agreed to raise taxes on the wealthy but their definition of "wealthy" is a little bit different than the Democrats'.

RELATED: Boehner and Pelosi Agree: Neither Wants to Go to Camp David

Most recently, Republicans have said they would raise taxes on households that make $550,000 a year and individuals that make $450,000 a year. Democrats by (slight) contrast set that threshold at $450,000 per household and $360,000 for individuals. Being optimistic about the whole thing, it feels like they'll be able to split the difference, somehow. So said Republican Senator Bob Corker from Tennessee, "We understand taxes are going up on the wealthy, baked in the cake, that's going to happen."

Inheritance Taxes for Everybody (but Mostly the Wealthy)

In recent years, the inheritance tax -- or, as some like the call it, the "death tax" -- has been on its way out since Bush took office in 2001. As the name implies, the tax applies to estates passed on to relatives or others through a deceased person's will. Like many things money-related, it's most significant when applied to large fortunes, say those over $500,000. The top rate of inheritance tax dropped from 55 percent during the Clinton years to 35 percent during the Bush years. If Congress does let us fall off the fiscal cliff, those rates will surge again.

Democrats are willing to limit that surge to around 45 percent with an exemption of $3.5 billion. Republicans would like those rates to remain the same. "Hill aides say Democrats are likely to make concessions on the estate tax to Republicans -- who loath high rates on what they've dubbed the 'death tax' -- in exchange for keeping the Bush tax cuts at the president's preferred threshold of $250,000," The Washington Post's Suzy Khimm explains. "Only a small handful of Americans would benefit from the more generous estate tax that Republicans are pushing for: Just 7,450 more estates -- 0.3 percent of the country's total -- have benefited from the rates that were cut in 2010." This is really important to Republicans, while others realize that it's another line item that stands to benefit the wealthiest Americans. Either way, it's holding up the process.

Spending Cuts for Important Government Programs

This is the real tricky bit. Politicians on both sides of the aisle have programs that they'd like to see remain decently funded or, in some cases, simply funded. However, avoiding the fiscal cliff necessarily means cutting spending as well as raising revenue. (Trust those that know: Falling off the fiscal cliff would be bad for everybody.) While tax hikes have dominated much of the debate around the fiscal cliff, spending cuts are the other side of the same coin. Republicans, generally speaking, are okay with leaving the predetermined spending cuts in place, which would slash defense spending by $110 billion, among other things. President Obama, who says he's already made $1 trillion in spending cuts and is ready to make another $1 trillion, would like to find some middle ground that would leave more of our government intact. Still, at least one senator in the GOP calls him the "Spender in Chief."

The trouble with massive spending cuts, inevitably, is the economic impact. We're not necessarily talking about the Army getting flimsier boots here. We're talking about thousands and thousands of people losing their jobs, a consequence that economists say will sling us back into the depths of a recession. In hard numbers, falling off the fiscal cliff would amount to $500 billion in tax hikes and spending cuts. That's a lot of jobs and a lot of income that Americans will never see. However, for every dollar raised by increasing revenue (a.k.a. raising taxes), the government can avoid cutting a dollar from federal budgets like Social Security, Medicare and national security. Obama says that raising taxes for the wealthy alone could save the average, middle-class American family $2,000 next year.?"If we can get that done, that takes a big bite out of the fiscal cliff," the president said on Meet the Press Sunday morning. "It avoids the worst outcomes."

Political Consequences

We don't even know what that term means. It's just a way to say that either side will have to deal with a lot complaints if the final fiscal cliff deal -- if there even is one -- is not the one they fought for. Nevertheless, this has been and continues to be a tremendously frustrating process for all Americans to watch, one that will have political consequences for both sides.

It's kind of like trying to watch a game of cricket, if you're an American. You're not really sure what the rules are. It's unclear what position anyone is playing with the exception of the batter and the pitcher. Excuse us, the?bowler.?The games can last for days, but it feels like weeks. And along the way, seriously nobody really truly knows what's going on. You can read as many explainers as you want -- explainers that you're obviously speed-reading while trying to watch the confusing game -- but it doesn't help.

Honestly, the best thing you can do is if you're watching this fiscal cliff game is call a good friend, find a bar and drink away the last few hours of this match. At this point, we all just want to know who the winner's going to be.

An image gallery gift from NASA's Swift

Dec. 28, 2012 ? Of the three telescopes carried by NASA's Swift satellite, only one captures cosmic light at energies similar to those seen by the human eye. Although small by the standards of ground-based observatories, Swift's Ultraviolet/Optical Telescope (UVOT) plays a critical role in rapidly pinpointing the locations of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), the brightest explosions in the cosmos.

But as the proxy to the human eye aboard Swift, the UVOT takes some amazing pictures. The Swift team is celebrating eight years of UVOT operations by collecting more than 100 of the instrument's best snapshots in a web-based photo gallery (http://www.swift.psu.edu/uvot/coolPics.php). The images also can be viewed with the free Swift Explorer Mission iPhone app (https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/swift-explorer/id465669299?mt=8) developed by the Swift Mission Operations Center (MOC), which is located in State College, Pa., and operated by Penn State.

Swift has detected an average of about 90 GRBs a year since its launch in 2004. "When we aren't studying GRBs, we use the satellite's unique capabilities to engage in other scientific investigations, some of which produce beautiful images from the UVOT that we're delighted to be able to share with the public," said Michael Siegel, the lead scientist on the UVOT and a research associate in astronomy and astrophysics at the MOC.

The targets range from comets and star clusters to supernova remnants, nearby galaxies and active galaxies powered by supermassive black holes.

"One of our more challenging projects in the past was completing an ultraviolet mosaic of M31, the famous Andromeda galaxy," said Stefan Immler, a member of the Swift team at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. "Because the galaxy is so much larger than the UVOT field of view, we had to take dozens of pictures and blend them together to show the whole object."

An ongoing mosaic project targets the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds, two small satellite galaxies orbiting our own, and makes the Andromeda effort look like child's play. Although the galaxies are much smaller than M31, they are both much closer to us and extend over much larger areas of the sky. The task involves acquiring and aligning hundreds of images and is far from complete.

With the UVOT's wavelength range of 1,700 to 6,000 angstroms, Swift remains one of few missions that study ultraviolet light, much of which is blocked by Earth's atmosphere.

The 6.5-foot-long (2 meter) UVOT is centered on an 11.8-inch (30 cm) primary mirror. Designed and built by the Mullard Space Science Laboratory in Surrey, England, the telescope module includes the primary and secondary mirrors, an external baffle to reduce scattered light, two redundant detectors -- only one has been used to date -- and a power supply.

Each detector lies behind an identical filter wheel. The wheel holds color filters that transmit a broad range of wavelengths as well as devices called grisms, which spread out incoming light in much the same way as a prism spreads sunlight into a rainbow of component colors. The detectors retain information on the position and arrival time of each photon of light, an operating mode similar to typical X-ray telescopes.

Because most ultraviolet light never reaches the ground, Swift's UVOT provides a unique perspective on the cosmos. For example, it can measure the amount of water produced in passing comets by detecting the ultraviolet emission of hydroxyl (OH), one of the molecular fragments created when ultraviolet sunlight breaks up water molecules. Other types of UVOT science include exploring emissions from the centers of active galaxies, studying regions undergoing star formation, and identifying some of the rarest and most exotic stars known.

Toward the end of its energy-producing life, a star like the sun will blow away its outer layers as its core transforms into a compact, Earth-sized remnant known as a white dwarf. This chapter of stellar evolution, known to astronomers as the post-asymptotic giant branch phase, lasts only about 100,000 years -- just an eye-blink in comparison to the star's total lifetime. To better understand the process, astronomers need to study large numbers of these unusual stars.

"The UVOT's capabilities give us a great tool for surveying stellar populations and cataloging rare types of ultraviolet-bright stars," Siegel explained.

One of the first targets for the stellar survey was the giant cluster Omega Centauri, which hosts millions of stars and may be the remains of a small galaxy. Thanks to Swift's UVOT, astronomers at Goddard and Penn State have cataloged hundreds of rare stellar types in the cluster and are now comparing their properties and numbers to predictions from theoretical models describing how stars evolve.

Congress extends foreign surveillance law

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The Senate gave final congressional approval Friday to a bill renewing the government's authority to monitor overseas phone calls and emails of suspected foreign spies and terrorists ? but not Americans ?without obtaining a court order for each intercept.

The classified Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act program was on the brink of expiring by year's end. The 73-23 vote sent the bill to a supportive President Barack Obama, whose signature would keep the warrantless intercept program in operation for another five years.

The Senate majority rejected arguments from an unusual combination of Democratic liberals and ideological Republican conservatives, who sought to amend the bill to require the government to reveal statistics showing whether any Americans were swept up in the foreign intercepts. The attempt lost, with 52 votes against and 43 in favor.

The Obama administration's intelligence community and leaders of the Senate's intelligence committee said the information should be classified and opposed the disclosure, repeating that it is illegal to target Americans without an order from a special U.S. surveillance court.

The group seeking more disclosures also sought ? unsuccessfully ? a determination by the government of whether any intelligence agency attempted to use information gained from foreigners to search for information on Americans without a warrant, referred to as "back-door" searches. The prohibition against targeting Americans without a warrant protects Americans wherever they are, in the United States or somewhere else.

The debate focused on the need to balance national security with civil liberties. Sens. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., and Saxby Chambliss, R-Ga., the chairwoman and top Republican on the Senate Intelligence Committee, warned that the classified intercept program would be jeopardized if even statistical information was disclosed. They sparred repeatedly with Sen. Ron Wyden, D-Ore., who held the bill up for months until he was allowed to argue on the Senate floor that Americans' civil liberties were in danger under the law.

During debate that began Thursday, Feinstein bluntly told Wyden, a fellow liberal, that she opposed his disclosure amendment because, "I know where this goes. Where it goes is to destroy the program."

Wyden insisted his group was interested only in making public estimates that already existed. In insisting on information about whether the foreign intercepts led to warrantless "back door" searches of Americans, the senator said there already had been one instance of such a violation.

He said the finding of a violation, details of which remain classified, "demonstrates the impact of the law on Americans' privacy has been real and is not hypothetical."

"How many phone calls to and from Americans have been swept up in this authority?" he asked.

A member of the intelligence committee, Wyden argued he was trying to "strike a balance between security and liberty" and that "the 300 million Americans who expect us to strike that balance ... are in the dark."

When Americans are targeted for surveillance, the government must get a warrant from a special 11-judge court of U.S. district judges appointed by the Supreme Court. In contrast, when foreigners abroad are targeted, the surveillance court approves annual certifications submitted by the attorney general and the director of national Intelligence that identify certain categories of foreign intelligence targets.

The Obama administration has called the secret intercepts "invaluable to the U.S. government's efforts to detect and prevent threats to America and its allies, while providing robust protections for the civil liberties and privacy of U.S. persons." It said if Congress had failed to extend the program, there would have been "a significant loss of intelligence" that would have impeded the ability to respond quickly to new threats.

The House in September approved the same five-year extension of the law by a vote of 301-118.

Feinstein said the surveillance law has procedures to restrict use of information on Americans that is inadvertently captured in the intercepts.

Chambliss argued that the intelligence committee keeps watch over any abuses by the government. "It's not abused. If there is a problem, we fix it," he said.

Feinstein said there were 100 arrests in terrorism cases between 2009 and 2012, some of them as a direct result of the surveillance program.

The Senate Judiciary Committee chairman, Democratic Sen. Patrick Leahy of Vermont, tried to substitute a three-year extension of the law instead of five, but the proposal was defeated with 52 votes against and 38 in favor.

Facebook Instagram use dived after photo fiasco: AppData

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Facebook Inc's Instagram lost almost a quarter of its daily users a week after it rolled out and then withdrew policy changes that incensed users who feared the photo-sharing service would use their pictures without compensation.

Instagram, which Facebook bought for $715 million this year, saw the number of daily active users who accessed the service via Facebook bottom out at 12.4 million as of Friday, versus a peak of 16.4 million last week, according to data compiled by online tracker AppData.

The popular app, which allows people to add filters and effects to photos and share them over the Internet or smartphones, experienced the drop over the brief, often-volatile holiday period.

Other popular apps also saw slippage in usage, and some were more pronounced. Yelp, for instance, saw daily active users -- again via Facebook -- slide to a weekly low of half a million on Thursday, from a high of 820,000 one week ago.

Instagram disputed the AppData survey, which was compiled from users that have linked the photo service to their own Facebook accounts, historically between 20 and 30 percent of Instagram members.

"This data is inaccurate. We continue to see strong and steady growth in both registered and active users of Instagram," a spokeswoman said in an emailed statement on Friday.

Looking out over a broader timeframe, Instagram's monthly active users edged up to 43.6 million as of Friday, an increase of 1.7 million over the past seven days, according to AppData.

"We'll have to monitor the data over the coming weeks to gain perspective on trends in Instagram's performance," AppData marketing manager Ashley Taylor Anderson said in an email.

ATTENTION-SEEKING

The sharp slide in activity highlighted by AppData was bound to draw attention on the heels of the controversial revision to Instagram's terms of service that, among other things, allowed an advertiser to pay Instagram "to display your username, likeness, photos (along with any associated metadata)" without compensation.

The subsequent public outrage prompted an apology from Instagram founder Kevin Systrom. Last week, a California Instagram user sued the company for breach of contract and other claims, in what may have been the first civil lawsuit to stem from the controversial change.

Instagram subsequently reverted to some of its original language.

The move renewed debate about how much control over personal data users must give up to live and participate in a world steeped in social media.

Analysts say Facebook, the world's largest social network, was laying the groundwork to begin generating advertising revenue, by giving marketers the right to display profile pictures and other personal information, such as who users follow in advertisements.

Its shares closed down 13 cents or 0.5 percent at $25.91 on the Nasdaq, in line with the broader market.

2013 to bring new hotel, new casino to local gamblers | TribLIVE

The $50 million Lady Luck Casino Nemacolin will open in summer at the Fayette County resort. This depicts the exterior of the former Wildside arcade, where the casino will be located. Source: Isle of Capri Casinos Inc.

A hotel at The Meadows, a casino in Fayette County and new games are on tap for Western Pennsylvania gamblers in 2013.

Regulators will award the license for the state?s 13th casino, as gambling industry leaders hope Americans have enough confidence in the economy to keep the slots spinning and the cards turning.

?We?re a discretionary income business,? Rivers General Manager Craig Clark says of casinos in general. ?We?re one of the first to be cut? when people have to reduce their spending.

In the first 11 months of the year, Pennsylvania casinos generated $2.9 billion in gambling revenue, an increase of 4.7 percent from the total through November 2011. With an eye toward increasing that figure again in 2013, casino executives plan new offerings to attract new players and keep familiar faces returning.

Lady Luck Casino Nemacolin will open in the summer at the Fayette County resort, says Isle of Capri spokeswoman Jill Alexander. Isle of Capri, which operates 15 casinos in six other states, will manage Lady Luck.

It will have 600 slot machines and 28 table games but no poker room, Alexander says. The casino will have 450 employees.

Lady Luck Nemacolin will be a resort casino, meaning it will be open only to hotel guests and to people making a $10 purchase, such as food, a souvenir or a gift card. Managers of existing Western Pennsylvania casinos say they don?t worry about competition specifically from Lady Luck.

?Nemacolin will have some minor effect, but I don?t think it will be dramatic,? says Sean Sullivan, vice president and general manager at The Meadows Racetrack and Casino in North Strabane. ?It?ll be attractive to certain types of players.?

Clark sees Nemacolin as more of a destination location, while most Rivers customers come from Allegheny County.

The Meadows

Officials are ?working tirelessly? on a hotel that will be connected to the casino, Sullivan says. He expects groundbreaking in the spring.

The hotel will have about 200 rooms. Although about 1,000 rooms are available in nearby hotels, Clark says an on-site facility is a ?critical component? for casino guests. ?Meadows Hotel? will be built below the south parking garage, in an area now used for bus parking.

Work also is to start in the spring for a retail development tentatively called ?The Street.? It will front on Racetrack Road and include shops, restaurants and a bank. Tenants might be announced next month.

Rivers

The casino recently remodeled its poker room and installed a new high-limit room.

Clark says Rivers? focus in 2013 will be on slot machines and promotions. The casino plans to add new slots and get new titles out faster. He says promotions will be bigger and more exclusive. The $300,000 ?mortgage mania? promotion in January offers to cover the winner?s mortgage payments for a year, up to $18,000, with secondary prizes of making car and credit card payments.

The casino will continue its emphasis on community involvement, he says. It will again be a partner with the Auto Show and plan a NASCAR event that will put winners in a NASCAR simulator.

?Our business is based in Pittsburgh and Allegheny County. We?re supported by the local community in a very significant way,? he says.

Statewide

A major decision for the Gaming Control Board will be awarding the license for a second casino in Philadelphia. Six companies are vying for the state?s last Category 2 license, which allows a stand-alone casino with up to 5,000 slot machines and 250 table games.

Although Pennsylvania appears to have replaced New Jersey as the No. 2 gambling states, it faces competition from expansion in New York, Massachusetts, Maryland and elsewhere.

The state Gaming Control Board will see that the approval process for new games is quick and efficient, a spokesman says. The board also notes that several casinos are adding entertainment and conference venues, hotels and additional restaurants.

Nationwide

Online gambling will remain the No. 1 topic. Supporters of federal legislation authorizing legal online poker pulled the plug on their proposal in mid-December, while pledging to try again in 2013.

A 2011 U.S. Department of Justice ruling says states may offer online games within their borders. Nevada has authorized operators of online poker site that are expected to begin operations this year, and Delaware seems poised to offer online slots as well as poker, roulette, blackjack and other games.

Last week, New Jersey?s Legislature approved allowing online versions of any game offered in Atlantic City casinos. The bill was sent to Gov. Chris Christie.

California and other states are exploring legalization of online gambling.

Wall Street heads for longest losing streak in three months

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Stocks fell on Friday, putting the S&P 500 on track for a fifth straight decline, as President Barack Obama and top congressional leaders were set to make a last-ditch attempt to steer the country away from severe fiscal austerity next year.

Obama and lawmakers from both political parties will meet at the White House on Friday afternoon for talks in an effort to agree on a solution before a New Year's deadline to keep large tax hikes and spending cuts from taking effect. Economists say that combination of automatic higher taxes and lower government spending - known as the "fiscal cliff" - could push the U.S. economy into a recession.

Trading was volatile and stocks rebounded from their session lows after unconfirmed reports that President Obama was about to offer a new plan to Republicans.

But investors' pessimism about achieving anything more than a stop-gap deal by the deadline was reflected in the benchmark S&P 500's drop of 1.3 percent so far this week. The broad index was on pace for its worst weekly performance since mid-November.

A five-day decline would be the S&P 500's longest losing streak in three months.

"There's a pretty good chance that we won't have something in hand by year-end," said Jonathan Golub, chief U.S. equity strategist at UBS, in New York. "It should be pretty obvious that that is now the majority case."

Golub, however, said investors were still counting on a deal that would avoid most of the tax hikes and spending cuts next year even if it does come after the deadline.

"It is widely believed that we're going to get a deal," he said. "We are not going to go over the cliff to the extent that we have a huge economic contraction."

With time running short, members of Congress may attempt to pass a retroactive fix to neutralize tax increases and spending cuts soon after the automatic fiscal policies come into effect on January 1.

The Dow Jones industrial average <.dji> fell 65.65 points, or 0.50 percent, to 13,030.66. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.spx> dropped 6.03 points, or 0.43 percent, to 1,412.07. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.ixic> slipped 7.29 points, or 0.24 percent, to 2,978.62.

"It doesn't matter which side wins, but at this point, nobody wants to play a game where there aren't rules," said Joe Costigan, director of equity research at Bryn Mawr Trust, in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania.

"So everybody is talking about what the prospects are for changes in the rules. But at the end of the day, nothing is happening."

Highlighting Wall Street's sensitivity to developments in Washington, stocks tumbled slightly more than 1 percent on Thursday after Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid warned that a deal was unlikely before the deadline. But late in the day, the three major U.S. stock indexes rebounded and ended down just 0.1 percent after the U.S. House of Representatives said it would hold an unusual Sunday session to work on a fiscal solution.

With many investors away for the holiday-shortened week, volume is expected to remain light and that could exacerbate the stock market's swings.

Positive economic data failed to alter the market's downtrend.

The National Association of Realtors said contracts to buy previously owned U.S. homes rose in November to their highest level in 2-1/2 years, while a report from the Institute for Supply Management-Chicago showed business activity in the U.S. Midwest expanded in December.

Barnes & Noble Inc shares rose 6.2 percent to $15.24 after the top U.S. bookstore chain said British publisher Pearson Plc had agreed to make a strategic investment in its Nook Media subsidiary. But Barnes & Noble also said its Nook business will not meet its previous projection for fiscal year 2013.

Shares of magicJack VocalTec Ltd jumped 8.5 percent to $17.67 after the company, which provides VoIP or voice over Internet protocol services, forecast more than $39 million in GAAP revenue and over 70 cents per share in operating income for the fourth quarter. The company also said it has appointed Gerald Vento as president and CEO, effective January 1.

The U.S.-listed shares of Canadian drugmaker Aeterna Zentaris Inc surged 16.1 percent to $2.52 after the company said it had reached an agreement with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration on a special protocol assessment by the FDA for a Phase 3 registration trial in endometrial cancer with AEZS-108 treatment.

Man pushed to death in front of NYC subway

Detectives in New York are searching for a female suspect who fled a subway station after a man was fatally pushed in front of a train on an elevated platform in Queens, N.Y.

At 8:04 p.m. on Thursday an unnamed male passenger was standing on the northbound platform of the 40th Street and Queens Blvd. in Queens, waiting for the 7 train. Witnesses told police that a woman was walking back and forth on the platform and talking to herself before she took a seat on a wooden bench on the platform.

As the 7 train approached the station, witnesses said the woman rose from the bench and pushed the man, who was standing with his back to her.

"They said that [she] pushed somebody to the tracks," Jiovanni Briones, who owns restaurant across the street from the station, told WABC. "Who knows, maybe it was a fight?"

Witnesses told police that the victim did not notice the woman behind him. He was struck by the first of the 11-car train, with his body pinned under the front of the second car as the train came to a stop, according to a statement from Deputy Commissioner Paul Brown.

After pushing the man onto the platform the woman then fled down two separate stair cases to Queens Blvd. She was described as wearing a blue, white and grey ski jacket, and grey and red Nike sneakers.

It is unclear if the two knew each other, or whether anyone on the platform attempted to help the man off the platform before he was struck by the train.

Police said that there was no video of the incident or suspect from the station itself, but detectives are now canvassing locations along Queens Blvd for witnesses and surveillance video.

Thursday's death marks the second incident this month of a man being killed after being pushed onto subway tracks and killed by an oncoming train.

On Dec. 3, 58-year-old Ki-Suck Han was tossed onto the subway track at 49th Street and Seventh Avenue around 12:30 p.m. after an altercation with a man who was later identified as 30-year-old Naeem Davis. Davis has been charged with murder in Han's death and was ordered held without bail.

Samsung Galaxy S4 Projected Keyboard - Business Insider

The video below from Rozetked purports to show a "rendering" of Samsung's forthcoming Galaxy S4 smartphone, which is poised to leapfrog the iPhone 5 when it comes out next year.

(Translation: The phone and features in the video are not actually the S4).

There are two cool features in the video:

First, the phone is thin and the screen is big. Many of those who own iPhones secretly covet the larger screens on Samsung phones, and this screen is big. And the rendered phone is thinner than the iPhone 5.

Second, the phone includes a "projected keyboard" feature in which the phone projects an image of a keyboard on a flat surface and then allows the user to type on the projected keys. If that is real and it works, that will be cool. Much cooler than carrying around an external keyboard.

The real Galaxy S4 is expected to come out early next year. The fear of many Apple fans is that, now that Samsung has basically caught up with Apple on the smartphone front--the Galaxy S3 is an excellent phone that some people prefer to the iPhone--this new phone will vault past the iPhone 5 and leave Apple scrambling to catch up.

Best wine over Christmas - Elitistreview

Back in 2010 I had the greatest Chablis of my life: Chablis Premier Cru Fourchaume ?Vignoble de Vaulorent? 2007 from Fevre. I had a bottle on Christmas eve and it remains the greatest Chablis I?ve tried in my life. My comments in the previous note still pretty much apply, only this was more complex and subtle, without losing any of the vibrant energy or classy life. It is just the complete Chablis experience.

Chablis 'Vignoble de Vaulorent' 2007, Fevre I was rather surprised that a wine of this fulgurating quality was bottled with a composite cork. This may have implications for it?s long term storage, I suppose, which is a bit of a shame as this is clearly a Chablis with a glorious life ahead of it. But you don?t need to wait, it shows everything at five years old with style and ?lan, throbbing with quality and bursting with style. If, like my associate Mr P (who is open-minded enough to call me Davy), you are fortunate enough to own a case of this I?d really start drinking. He has promised to pop a bottle when I meet him in April ? if I was that kind of person I?d be wetting myself in anticipation.

So you must be thinking this insanely fine Chablis will set you back an arm and a leg from some merchant who requires your first-ranked teddy bear as deposit. Not so! You can get it for ?29 a bottle from The Wine Society. In these enlightened times greater bargains are rarely found. I may go and score myself another couple of bottles right now.

We drank this coruscating Chablis with a chicken from the supplier of the best chickens I?ve eaten on a regular basis ? Beechcroft Direct. Here?s the bird:
Roast chickenIf?I am brutally honest, I overcooked?the?chicken just a little; something I?very rarely do

No?such problems with The Editor?s goose fat roast potatoes!

Editor Dani's goose fat roast potatoes

He cooks the best roast potatoes I have eaten, when my meat/oven requirements allow for perfection, and no one else even comes close. Sorry Linda.

So it?s been a happy few days in Elitistreview Towers, we have drank well although not excessively, and eaten appallingly brilliantly. Nothing matched that ?29 Chablis, though!

Happy holidays!

Obama invites congressional leaders to cliff talk

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama will meet with congressional leaders at the White House on Friday in search of a compromise to avoid a year-end "fiscal cliff" of across-the-board tax increases and deep spending cuts.

The development capped a day of growing urgency. Obama returned early from a Hawaiian vacation while lawmakers snarled across a partisan divide, leaders in each party blaming the other for an episode of government gridlock that threatens the economy with a new recession.

Adding to the woes confronting the middle class was a pending spike of $2 per gallon or more in milk prices if lawmakers failed to pass farm legislation by year's end.

Four days before the deadline, the White House disputed reports that Obama was sending lawmakers a scaled-down plan to avoid the fiscal cliff of tax increases and spending cuts.

Administration officials confirmed the Friday meeting at the White House in a bare-bones announcement that said the president would "host a meeting."

A spokesman for House Speaker John Boehner quickly issued a statement that said the Ohio Republican would attend and "continue to stress that the House has already passed legislation to avert the entire fiscal cliff and now the Senate must act."

Top Senate leaders said they remain ready to seek a last-minute agreement. Yet there was no legislation pending and no sign of negotiations in either the House or the Senate on a bill to prevent the tax hikes and spending cuts that economists say could send the economy into a recession.

Far from conciliatory, the rhetoric was confrontational and at times unusually personal.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., accused House Speaker John Boehner of running a dictatorship, citing his refusal to call a vote on legislation to keep taxes steady for most while letting them rise at upper incomes. The bill "would pass overwhelmingly," Reid predicted, and said the Ohio Republican won't change his mind because he fears it might cost him re-election as speaker when the new Congress convenes next week.

Boehner seems "to care more about keeping his speakership than keeping the nation on a firm financial footing," he said in remarks on the Senate floor.

A few hours later, McConnell expressed frustration and blamed the standoff on Obama and the Democrats. "Republicans have bent over backwards. We stepped way, way out of our comfort zone," he said, referring to GOP offers to accept higher tax rates on some taxpayers.

"We wanted an agreement, but we had no takers. The phone never rang, and so here we are five days from the new year and we might finally start talking," McConnell said.

Still, he warned: "Republicans aren't about to write a blank check for anything the Democrats put forward just because we find ourselves at the edge of the cliff."

Brendan Buck, a spokesman for Boehner, responded in a similar vein to Reid's comments. "Harry Reid should talk less and legislate more if he wants to avert the fiscal cliff. The House has already passed legislation to do so," he said, referring to a measure that extends existing cuts at all income levels.

Addressing the GOP rank and file by conference call, Boehner said the next move is up to the Senate, which has yet to act on House-passed bills to retain expiring tax cuts at all income levels and replace across-the-board spending cuts with targeted savings aimed largely at social programs.

"The House will take this action on whatever the Senate can pass - but the Senate must act," he said, according to a participant in the call.

Boehner told Republican lawmakers the House would convene on Sunday evening. Rep. Tom Cole, R-Okla., an ally of the speaker, quoted him as having said "he didn't really intend to put on the floor something that would pass with all the Democratic votes and few of the Republican votes."

The risk of higher milk prices stems from the possibility that existing farm programs will expire at year's end, and neither chamber of Congress has scheduled a vote on even a temporary extension to prevent a spike. There have been unverified estimates that the cost to consumers of a gallon of milk could double without action by Congress.

The president flew home from Hawaii overnight after speaking with top congressional leaders.

Before leaving the White House last Friday, the president had called on lawmakers to pass scaled-down legislation that prevents tax increases for the middle class, raises rates at upper incomes and renews expiring unemployment benefits for the long-term jobless. He said he still supports a more sweeping measure to include spending cuts to reduce deficits, but said they could wait until the new year.

That capped an unpredictable week in which Boehner pivoted away from comprehensive deficit reduction talks with Obama to an aborted attempt to push legislation through the House that retained existing tax levels except above $1 million. Anti-tax Republicans rebelled at raising rates on million-dollar earners, and Boehner backpedaled and canceled the planned vote.

Without congressional action, current tax rates will expire on Dec. 31, resulting in a $536 billion tax increase over a decade that would touch nearly all Americans. In addition, the military and other federal departments would have to begin absorbing about $110 billion in spending cuts.

Failure to avoid the "fiscal cliff" doesn't necessarily mean tax increases and spending cuts would become permanent, since the new Congress could pass legislation cancelling them retroactively after it begins its work next year.

But gridlock through the end of the year would mark a sour beginning to a two-year extension of divided government that resulted from last month's elections in which Obama won a new term and Republicans retained their majority in the House.

The tax issue in particular has been Obama's first test of muscle after his re-election in November. He ran for a new term calling for higher taxes on the wealthy, and postelection public opinion polls show continued support for his position.

Boehner's decision to support higher rates on million-dollar earners marked a significant break with long-standing GOP orthodoxy, but the resistance among his rank and file so far has trumped him as well as any mandate the president claims.

Any chance of seeing such a functionality implemented in the sample editor ?
I tried It-alien's Morpher tool but it won't work with single-cycle waveforms for instance.
Anybody else interested in this ?

I'd love to mix different samples beyond just layering two sounds.
But how does the sample morphing work? Is it a spectral analysis the gives a timbral mix like vocoding, an envelope analysis that matches attack and sustain from one sample to another or a signal convolution?
