A backyard or garden is vulnerable to becoming overgrown and wild if not cared for regularly. Properties that have been unmaintained while waiting for a buyer frequently have a wild yard. This occurs because weeds, shrubs and other plants will grow unchecked in whatever direction is most favorable if they are not managed. Wildlife and insects contribute to the problem by removing tamed and beneficial plants so that there is more room for invasive and problematic growth. Reclaiming a wild yard will take some work, but will ultimately provide a better outdoor living space and less potential problems for the nearby home.

Deal With Weeds First

A variety of different plants, shrubs and trees contribute to a wild yard. The first step is to remove as many of the green weeds in the space as possible. This is best done initially with treatments of chemical weed killers that will start to create clear areas in the backyard. Some very invasive or slightly woody weeds will need to be manually cleared with weed trimmers or large pruners. Some undesirable plants actually have thick woody stalks that do not respond well to weed trimmers. These must be removed with sharp objects like a pruner or saw. This initial removal of the overgrown areas will create a more manageable yard. It does not, however, remove underground runners or more invasive species that might return later.

Clear Larger Growth

Fallen branches, dead trees and old stumps should be removed only after most of the green growth has been cleared out. This ensures safety and reveals exactly what has to be done. Chainsaws are a practical choice for cutting thick branches, unwanted hedges and trees. It is also convenient to use chainsaws to break down larger materials that might have settled on the ground such as old wooden fencing. Some specialty equipment might be needed such as a stump grinder or a wood chipper in order to remove larger obstructions that are difficult to manage.

Reclaim The Area

After all of the visible unwanted greenery has been removed with weed trimmers and chainsaws it is time to actually reclaim the yard. This first involves using hand tools or power tillers to turn at least the top few inches of soil down to a depth of a single foot if possible. This will kill runners, eliminate grubs and destroy any invasive plants that have taken root. Yards that are adjacent to wild wooded areas will have fewer problems if weed barriers or edging strips are placed along the property borders to stop runners from coming into the reclaimed space. The property is now ready to be reseeded to create a lawn, or replanted to create a garden.
