Rogers previously served as Program Executive Office Ground Combat Systems deputy, also located at the Detroit Arsenal. In that role, Rogers managed the development, systems integration, acquisition, testing, fielding, sustainment and improvement of ground combat systems for with the Army?s transformation plan. Ad-busting apps help voters see through political noise

With the US election season heating up, the airwaves are once again saturated with political advertisements. But as both President Barack Obama, challenger Mitt Romney, and their many supporting organisations wage war through television and radio spots, voters are now being given tools to sift through all the noise: smartphone apps that tell listeners all about the groups behind the adverts.

Technology is playing a much more pivotal role in presidential politics in 2012 than four years ago. Seizing on the rise of the smartphone, the non-profit group Sunlight Foundation, which works to increase government openness, has built an app called Ad Hawk that uses a phone's microphone to listen to campaign ads and identify them. It then looks up the ad in a database maintained by the foundation, and returns information like which group sponsored the ad, where it's airing, and any relevant media reports about the sponsors.

The experience is sort of like the music-matching app Shazam, but for political ads. Ad Hawk is powered by the Echoprint algorithm, a piece of open source software built by music analysis firm The Echo Nest that is normally used to create digital "fingerprints" of popular songs.

When recently tested in New Scientist's Boston bureau, the app was pointed at a Mitt Romney ad called "Silence", which criticises Obama's economic policy. Ad Hawk correctly identified the spot, adding that it was sponsored by Romney for President, Inc. - in effect, the Romney campaign.

Another advert, titled "Debate", was correctly identified as sponsored by the Restore our Future super PAC. The app also reveals how much money the group has received ($89 million) in this election cycle, and how positive or negative its messages are. Restore our Future's ads have only supported republican candidates.

The release of Ad Hawk follows the release of a similar app, called Super PAC app for revealing the funding sources of political campaigns. Super PAC app is only available for Apple iOS (Ad Hawk is available for both iOS and Android), and uses an audio fingerprinting method from Tunesat - a company which helps rights holders find out where their music is being played, allowing them to track down copyright violations.

But worryingly, the incidence of womb cancer is increasing. It is now more common than ovarian cancer and deaths number 1,937, over twice the number for cervical cancer. (Vaginal and vulval cancers are very rare.)

The Eve Appeal says it?s vital to recognise the symptoms that you should discuss with your doctor. Often they won?t be an indicator of serious illness but it could save your life.

Signs and symptoms of ovarian cancer: pelvic or abdominal pain, increased abdominal size/persistent bloating (not bloating that comes and goes), feeling full without eating much, lack of appetite, needing to urinate more urgently or more often than usual. These are common symptoms but should be taken seriously if they are experienced frequently, are persistent and have started within the last 12 months.

Signs and symptoms of cervical cancer: any unusual bleeding from the vagina particularly after sex or after the menopause (when periods have stopped), persistent vaginal discharge that is blood-stained or smells?unpleasant. Even if you have been for screening (a ?smear? test), do tell your doctor if you have any of these symptoms.

Signs and symptoms of womb cancer: this is almost always curable if caught at an early stage. Cervical screening is not targeted at detecting womb cancer. Key early indicators are vaginal bleeding between periods, or after the menopause. Generally, if you have any abnormal bleeding, tell your GP immediately.

Landrieu added: "We are much, much better prepared structurally than before."

The thing I come across the most, as a reader and script consultant, is trouble with dialogue and more specifically, the way characters speak. There are a lot of books on character development out there, and most writing courses cover it a little bit, but there really aren?t that many resources for how your character should speak, except of course real life.

When you are creating your characters you really have to take into consideration not only the things they would say but also how they would say them. For example: A rich snooty man from an upper class family who graduated from Harvard might possibly say, ?Good evening, how are you doing tonight?? While an uneducated, or less educated hipster character would say something like ?What?s the haps?? Both characters are saying the same thing but in very different ways. If you think about your friends and how they speak, you will start to see how very different they all are. Ever hear someone say, ?Only you would say it that way? about an expression or something you said? This is what I mean.

When writing dialogue, writers often forget that characters speak differently. I?ve read so many scripts where either the characters all sound exactly alike or they have the voice of the writer or they go in and out of character. It doesn?t matter what genre you are writing, your character need to be his or her own person.

It?s understandable how this is missed so often. You?ve read all the great books on screenwriting: Robert McKee, Syd Field, Blake Snyder, etc., and you know that on page 19 ?this? must happen and you know all the archetypes of character and you have spent months perfecting your story and then they speak and it all falls apart. This is the same for television. You have taken all the great TV writing course around, you have read all the books, watched countless hours of your favorite shows and even managed to write a few specs, and then your characters speak in your original pilot and they might as well be the same person. This is very common, so don?t feel bad, we have all been there.

There are many ways you can fix this problem.

- First of all, have your script read by other writers and, if they don?t give you character feedback, then ask for it.

- Have your script read out loud; you need to hear how your characters sound.

- Watch both film and television.

- Go to plays.

- Read books.

- Observe people in your every day life and start making note of how they speak and what they say. Does your brother start every sentence with ?dude? and, if so, what does that tell us about him?

It is also essential to study great films and read the scripts. There are many resources out there for scripts online, one of my favorites is Simply Scripts. Any screenplays by: Cameron Crowe, the Coen Brothers, Quentin Tarantino, and/or Woody Allen is a good place to start. Their characters have very specific ways of speaking. You can also go to the WGA site and get a list of the greatest films.?Most great films have great characters and great characters have great dialogue.

Some outstanding television shows to study for dialogue are: Mad Men, Breaking Bad, Grey?s Anatomy, How I Met Your Mother, The Big Bang Theory, and Californication. It?s up to you really what you want to watch, we all have different tastes, but the point is you can find great characters to study all around you.

If you are writing novels, your job is a little bit easier because you have pages to write narrative explaining how the character is feeling, but it?s a trap you don?t want to fall into. You still want your characters to stand on their own when they speak.

Breast Cancer Survivors Walk The 3-Day To Inspire, Support - WCCO

MAPLEWOOD, Minn. (WCCO) - A sea of pink tents helped brighten up the gray skies in Maplewood. This tent city is part of the Susan G. Komen 3-Day, an event designed to raise money for breast cancer research.

Dr. Sheri Phillips, the National Spokesperson Susan G Komen 3-Day, says over a thousand participants are expected.

?We had 14 hundred wonderful participants show up on Friday morning ready to walk an average of 20 miles a day for three consecutive days all to put an end to breast cancer,? Phillips said.

Dr. Sheri Philips herself is a breast cancer survivor. She says the stories behind why people walk are inspirational.

Most of those stories are born from the writings and pictures left behind in the Remembrance Tent.

Helen Stripe is a medical crew captain and a three-time breast cancer survivor.

?I?m the product of research this is the Susan Komen 3-Day and all the money that we raised affects me, and what happens to me,? Stripe said.

She has been cancer free for several years, and a part of the 3-Day for more than 9 years. Stripe feels helping others is her way of paying back the people who are walking for her and others who battle against breast cancer.

?It?s a service we offer that keeps our walkers walking. The main goal is to try to get everybody to finish the three day,? she said.

Stripe feels every walker is here for her, as well as their loved ones. So she feels giving back is her way of staying in step with the hope of finding a cure.

The 3-Day will end Sunday at the State Fairgrounds.

Last year the walkers raised more than $82 million nationwide.

AP Exclusive: Romney uses secretive data-mining

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Mitt Romney's success in raising hundreds of millions of dollars in the costliest presidential race ever can be traced in part to a secretive data-mining project that sifts through Americans' personal information ? including their purchasing history and church attendance ? to identify new and likely, wealthy donors, The Associated Press has learned.

For the data-mining project, the Republican candidate has quietly employed since at least June a little-known but successful analytics firm that previously performed marketing work for a colleague tied to Bain & Co., the management-consulting firm that Romney once led.

The head of Buxton Co. of Fort Worth, Texas, chief executive Tom Buxton, confirmed to the AP his company's efforts to help Romney identify rich and previously untapped Republican donors across the country.

The Romney campaign declined to discuss on the record its work with Buxton or the project's overall success.

There are no records of payments to Buxton from Romney's campaign, the Republican National Committee or a joint fundraising committee. Under federal law, companies cannot use corporate money or resources, such as proprietary data analysis, for in-kind contributions to campaigns.

Buxton said he's working for the Romney campaign because he wants "to be on the winning team."

He once worked with a former Romney business partner to provide insights, for example, about where Petco should open a new pet-supply store to maximize profits. In addition to Buxton, the data-mining project was described to the AP by a Romney fundraiser who spoke on condition of anonymity because the fundraiser did not want to face repercussions for describing internal campaign processes.

Businesses use those kinds of analytics firms to answer key questions for clients, such as where to build a retail store or where to mail pamphlets touting a new product. The analysis doesn't directly bring in campaign contributions, but it generates the equivalent of sales leads for Romney's campaign.

The project relies upon a sophisticated analysis by powerful computers of thousands of commercially available, expensive databases that are lawfully bought and sold behind the scenes by corporations, including details about credit accounts, families and children, voter registrations, charitable contributions, property tax records and survey responses. It combines marketing data with what is known in this specialized industry as psychographic information about Americans.

The effort by Romney appears to be the first example of a political campaign using such extensive data analysis.

President Barack Obama's re-election campaign has long been known as data-savvy, but Romney's project appears to take a page from the Fortune 500 business world and dig deeper into available consumer data.

An early test analyzed details of more than 2 million households near San Francisco and elsewhere on the West Coast and identified thousands of people who would be comfortably able and inclined to give Romney at least $2,500 or more.

An AP analysis this week determined that Romney's campaign has made impressive inroads into even traditionally Democratic neighborhoods, collecting more than $350,000 this summer around San Francisco in contributions that averaged $400 each. High-dollar donors have been essential to Romney's election effort, unlike Obama, who relies on more contributors giving smaller amounts.

Romney and the GOP have out-fundraised Obama's re-election effort for the past three months.

The fate of the presidency may depend on who raises more money in the campaign, whose cost for the first time is approaching $2 billion. That figure includes hundreds of millions of dollars spent by "super" political committees that accept unlimited and in some cases effectively anonymous contributions from millionaires, companies, labor groups and others to pay for television campaign advertisements across the nation.

Buxton confirmed that the data-mining project began with the help of Dick Boyce, Romney's former Bain & Co. colleague, after Romney joined fundraising forces with the Republican National Committee. Buxton expressed such confidence in his business and analysis methods that, in nearly two decades of running his firm, he told AP he has always been able to answer essential questions for customers.

"I can look at data of any kind and say, 'I want to know who that $100 donor could be,'" Buxton said. "We look at data of any kind."

Obama's campaign employs its own form of data analysis to lure potential supporters, via Facebook and Twitter, to fine-tune messages for supporters and potential donors. The Obama campaign declined to comment on its internal fundraising practices, although Buxton said it doesn't work with Obama's campaign.

Romney's campaign has also been secretive about how it raises its money, and most fundraising events have been closed to the press. Unlike Obama, Romney's campaign has declined to publicly identify the names of major fundraisers, known as bundlers, who have helped amass much of its money. Details of this project have not been made public until now, as payments to Buxton aren't reflected in federal campaign expense reports.

Buxton is not listed as a vendor in any of the campaign's reports submitted to the Federal Election Commission, although some campaigns do not report expenses until the vendor sends them a bill.

When AP initially asked Buxton about its work for Romney, it declined to acknowledge that it helped raise money for the RNC, even as its own website displayed a prominent log-in page for "2012 presidential donor prospecting." That web address contained the letters "RNC" ? a common abbreviation for the Republican National Committee. After the AP's continued questioning, the company replaced the "RNC" letters in the web address with a generic "campaign" the next day.

This is not Buxton's first foray into politics: In 2006, the company produced 1,000 names for a Connecticut campaign to meet a write-in ballot requirement, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram then reported, and 900 of them signed up.

Few in Washington campaign circles recognized the work of Buxton, although it lists thousands of other clients in the public and private sector, including hospitals and local governments.

Verizon Vacation Blackout Aligns With iPhone 5 Launch Rumors

The expected iPhone 5 launch next month will not only tax the resources of Apple but its carrier partners as well. According to new report from TechCrunch, vacation blackouts imposed by Verizon Wireless are in line with rumors about a Sept. 21 iPhone 5 launch.

Citing a trusted Verizon employee, TechCrunch said Verizon employees are banned from taking vacation time between Sept. 21 and Sept. 30.

Last week, meanwhile, BGR said an AT&T training event was moved to the first week in October so it wouldn't conflict with a "huge announcement."

Those reports are in line with rumors that Apple will hold a press event on Sept. 12 to unveil the next-gen iPhone (and possibly an iPad mini), and launch the device on Sept. 21.

Apple has not made any announcements. The iPhone 4S made its debut during an Oct. 4 press event and hit stores on Oct. 14.

(MENAFN - Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) Kuwait's trade surplus with Japan narrowed 20.7 percent in July to JPY 66.7 billion (USD 841 million) from a year earlier, shrinking for the third straight month, while Kuwait maintained black ink with Japan for the 54th consecutive month, the Finance Ministry said Wednesday.

Kuwait's exports to Japan fell 16.3 percent to JPY 77.2 billion (USD 974 million) for the third straight monthly decline, while imports from Japan jumped 29.7 percent year-on-year to JPY 10.5 billion (USD 132 million), up for the 10th month, a preliminary ministry report said.

The Middle East's trade surplus with Japan also narrowed 8.2 percent to JPY 804.8 billion (USD 10.2 billion) last month, with Japan-bound exports from the region falling 5.4 percent from a year earlier to JPY 989.5 billion (USD 12.3 billion). Energy exports, which accounted for 97.8 percent of the region's total shipments to Japan, went down 5.7 percent on the year.

Among resources, crude oil shipments from the Middle East declined 10.6 percent, while liquefied natural gas (LNG) marked a 53.8 percent rise. Imports from Japan to the Middle East rose 9.0 percent to JPY 184.8 billion (USD 2.3 billion) on the back of solid shipments of automobiles, steel, and machinery.

The world's third-biggest economy posted a global deficit of JPY 517.4 billion (USD 6.5 billion) in July for the first black ink in two months, as exports tumbled amid the global economic downturn stemming from Europe's debt crisis, the ministry said.

It was the biggest trade deficit for the month of July since comparable data became available in 1979.

The value of exports fell 8.1 percent from a year earlier to JPY 5.313 trillion (USD 67.0 billion) for the second straight month of decline, while imports gained 2.1 percent to JPY 5.831 trillion (USD 73.6 billion) for the first rise in two months on higher costs for LNG. Exports to China, Japan's largest trading partner, fell 11.9 percent, the sharpest drop since February, as the Chinese economy slowed due to the European debt crisis.

Japanese utilities have boosted imports of LNG for thermal power generation, as most of the nation's 50 workable nuclear reactors remain idled in the wake of the radiation accident in March 2011 at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, which was triggered by the massive earthquake and tsunami.

Facebook announced on its Developer Blog today that it will allow users to mention their friends in messages in Open Graph apps. While users can already "action tag" their friends using other apps (Facebook uses foursquare as its example), the update will allow users to "mention tag" friends as well. The difference, as inferred from their names, is that action tags are for doing something with a friend, say out eating a meal together, whereas mention tags can be used for anything in the text of a user post.

Negotiation Tip: Lay All Requirements Before Closing The Deal

I have an important business presentation scheduled 8 days from now, and I figured I should bring some business cards to exchange with people who will be there. The cards I had in hand were old and with incorrect information on them (e.g., old email and telephone number), so I decided to get new ones.

After researching a bit on the web I found a local company that does both the design and the printing of the cards. They are quite expensive (around $150 for 1,000 cards), but their work looks solid, so I decided to go with them.

On the website it said that delivery took up to 10 week days, but I figured it wouldn?t be a problem for them to deliver my cards within 8 days.

Long story short I paid upfront, they sent a mock of the design, I liked it and said they could proceed to print. I also mentioned I would need the cards within 8 days. The answer I got back:

?Maybe the cards will be ready within 8 days, but we can?t guarantee it. As you read on our website our delivery time is 10 week days.?

My big mistake was to close the deal too soon. I am pretty sure that if I had put a requirement of getting the cards within 8 days before closing the deal and paying the answer would be: ?Sure thing, we can most definitely deliver it within 8 days.? After the money changed hands, though, my bargaining power was down the drain.

Sure, it was just a set of business cards and $150, but the concept applies to any sort of negotiation, whether you are buying a car, a business, hiring a freelancer and so on.

Lesson learned: remember to lay all your requirements down before closing the deal and paying the other part.

Louisiana needs statewide plan to battle obesity | NOLA.com

For the past five years, Louisiana has consistently ranked in the top 5 percent of obese states in the nation. But Louisianans can lose pounds if individuals, communities and policymakers all collaborate to enact a statewide plan, local health experts say.

"A multilevel approach is needed," said Dr. Melinda Sothern, a national fitness and nutrition expert who currently serves as academic program director at the LSU department of behavioral and community health sciences. "We need state legislators to support the grassroots-level efforts," Sothern said.

The Fit NOLA Challenge for a Healthier Louisiana project is one such program. The Louisiana Public Health Institute and City of New Orleans health department will partner with community organizations to encourage the approximately 64,000 residents in underserved neighborhoods to use their neighborhood parks and buy fresh foods.

With $2.2 million in funding, Fit NOLA will link community health clinics, parks and farmers markets in the St. Roch, Gert Town and Hoffman Triangle-Central City neighborhoods.

Every week, the participating parks will feature concession stands offering healthy foods and promoting fun physical activities. The clinics will give fresh-food vouchers to diabetic patients and expectant mothers to redeem at neighboring farmers markets. To encourage use of the parks, police officers and volunteer reservists will provide security.

"New Orleans is burdened by higher obesity rates, but the enthusiasm, energy and potential for this community to win that battle is there," said Dr. Karen DeSalvo, city health commissioner. "Together, we're going to win."

The program also focuses on engaging young people in schools to take more responsibility for their health. According to experts, children in Louisiana are the second fattest in the nation. The work of the student Rethinkers has successfully changed many school policies on cafeteria food, bathrooms and student discipline after Hurricane Katrina. They created an annual School Food Report rating the quality of cafeteria food at every public school in New Orleans. The Rethinkers will help develop an empowerment curriculum for Fit NOLA that will include school assemblies, workshops and sessions for students on how to make healthier choices.

"If you're going to impact students, it's best to have students at the forefront," said Thena Robinson-Mock, executive director of Rethink. She says that their partnership with Fit NOLA will push the Rethinkers to become better youth leaders and also help provide the program with a voice for healthy young people.

Last year, Louisiana ranked as the second most obese in the nation, according to a recent report by the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. At 33.4 percent, Louisiana's obesity rates are second only to Mississippi, which leads the nation at 34.9 percent. No state had a rate lower than 20 percent, an indication that obesity has reached epidemic proportions in the nation.

Sothern says she is disappointed at how efforts to battle the disease in Louisiana have not been as effective as she hoped.

"What we've done thus far hasn't been major, but we do have some good policies in schools," she said. These include reducing the number of vending machines, reinforcing physical education programs, incorporating local produce in cafeteria menus and promoting edible schoolyards.

However, according to Sothern, enforcing these policies is difficult, especially as they vary within every parish and school district. The persistent lack of funding also prevents most obesity programs from launching on time.

It's important to have a coordinated statewide plan that policymakers, schools, communities and health care providers can implement together, she said.

Aside from reinforcing current efforts, additional policies encouraging physical activity should be developed, such as enforcing pedestrian lanes and bike zones and reinstituting school recess for children. Sothern says that most people do not know the role of the environment in promoting obesity.

The state also needs to pour more health care dollars into programs that manage the treatment and care of overweight people.

"If we want to see waistlines reduced, we're going to have to invest in infrastructure," Sothern said.

Some title, huh?? I would have liked to be more creative about it, but I?ve been put off-balance, spun round and sat down by the magnitude of mysteries lately.? It?s not as hard to accept the inevitability of death when the person dying is old, but it can still pop up in unanticipated ways.? I must say goodbye to two different men I sang with for years in church choirs.? One is 80, and last year he had a hip replacement that gave him greater mobility and a significant reduction in pain.? Things were really looking up for him, just in time to discover he has terminal cancer.

My other friend was still in his fifties.? He was diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer, and he died within weeks, before those outside his family had even heard he was ill.? Besides being a gifted singer, he was a talented chef.? Last summer he was in our kitchen, demonstrating how to make reduction sauces.

I was inspired by reflecting on the life of one of my little town?s most vibrant spirits.? Frank D?Amore?s father died when he was a child, and his mother was an abusive alcoholic.? He was a homeless teen in Seattle.? But he was born so full of life force that he always believed he could transform difficult circumstances through the energy of his will.? He referred to it as his magic, the ability to make things he imagined become real.

Frank learned to bake through welfare programs, and co-founded two bakeries and a caf? that still exist here.? He also founded our local Marine Science Center, was an extreme sports enthusiast, and a carpenter who helped restore Victorian homes during our rebirth in the 1970s.? He believed in taking care of people who had less, as others had helped him.? The only thing he couldn?t transform with his magic was the Type I diabetes that overtook him at age 60.

What would cause a man in that situation to end his life in such a dramatic fashion, like it was a scene from one of his own movies?? There must have been some kind of sad mystery going on there.

Some of the lives around me that continue are just as mysterious.? Mary?s aunt is 101 now.? She?s been in dementia care for years.? She?s lost the ability to feed herself, has been hallucinating, and is incontinent.? She often slips from her bed to the floor when trying to reach a chair.? She asks the same questions repeatedly, and is unable to operate the TV or phone without assistance.? But the rest of her body, aside from her brain, just keeps on trucking.? This could go on for a couple more years.? I don?t understand the purpose of dying in that kind of slow motion, since she herself has lost the ability to reflect upon it.? I would never want that gradual dissolve to oblivion for myself, though I wouldn?t consider jumping off a bridge either.

My mother has a new boyfriend.? She and I share a similar attraction to unusual people.? He?s a retired policeman who was in a serious auto accident.? The top of his head was shaved off and his brain was exposed.? He was in a coma for two years.? Nobody expected him to continue living, let alone wake up and regain most of his former faculties.? He apparently has an occasional lack of editorial restraint, but otherwise he drives, speaks normally and seems like quite a nice guy.? Doctors are studying his recovery using the latest neuroimaging techniques like PET, MEG and NIRS.? How much injury brains can endure and recover from is a big mystery.

Mary still needs a small amount of painkillers and anti-inflammatory drugs each day to function properly.? Our life is less stressful and slower than it was in El Lay, and that has helped reduce her need for medicine.? Raising the puppy is physically and spiritually good for us both.? My old kitty cat, Dixie, is too arthritic to groom her hindquarters now, but her mood is as upbeat as it has been since the day I rescued her from a parking lot at three months of age.? Every morning she meows to be fed, and she still wants to cuddle on the couch next to my butt, chattering away in imitation of human speech.? What is it she?s been talking about for the past 15 years?

I?m fine.? Rather incredibly well in fact.? I?ve been dropping a few pounds by doing more exercise and drinking more water.? I need new reading glasses, but nothing hurts and everything physical works.? There are three retired psychologists on my block in case I need help with my inner demons, and I?m not afraid of therapy.? No slave to fashion, I live in pajamas (medical scrubs) and read, write and walk around my beautiful little town until I get a phone call to go take bone pictures.? There?s so much life.? On moonless nights, the plankton glow in the bay.? The trees are everywhere.? The deer are everywhere.? If things continue this way I might still be around to retire and write fiction.? A lot of stories have formed in my mind from all this observation.? How it will turn out is still a mystery.
