Record Price For Grahame Sydney Painting Delights | Stuff.co.nz

CHARLIE GATES AND JAZIAL CROSSLEY Grahame Sydney's Night House II

RECORD PRICE: Grahame Sydney's Night House II.

A Grahame Sydney painting has sold for a record price at an auction in Wellington.

Night House II, painted in 1995, sold for $160,000 at Dunbar Sloane's New Zealand & International Fine Art sale on Wednesday night.

It is the most anyone has paid for a Sydney painting but less than the $180,000 to $240,000 estimated by auctioneers.

The oil-on-canvas piece, which is one of Sydney's best known, was owned by art collector and Coast to Coast founder Robin Judkins. He said he was thrilled by the sale price, although two other Sydney works he owns failed to sell.

"I am absolutely stoked. We will have to see how we go with the other two as buyers are in negotiations for those."

The Dunbar Sloane auctions on Wednesday and Tuesday sold more than $1 million of art in total, with several of the most high-profile pieces still under negotiation, including a Charles Goldie of a sleeping Maori warrior, entitled Sleep 'tis a Gentle Thing, Pokai, A Warrior Chieftain of the Ngaitamaru Tribe.

Bill Hammond's Volcano Flag, estimated at $250,000, was also under negotiation. Two smaller Hammond works sold for a total of $36,000, while three prints sold for a total of $7000.

A Ralph Hotere estimated at $80,000, entitled Black Painting No 1, from 1968-69, was also under negotiation.
