And its not just in sports. Last summer I decided I wanted to get into power boating. I created a romantic vision of leaving work at the end of the day and heading to the marina where my boat would be waiting tied up at the dock ready for a sprint out on the open water. What I have instead is what one of our family friends calls a ?driveway boat?. The cost of a marina membership, annual slip fees and what I have now learned is increased maintenance and cleaning costs of boats left in water quickly outstripped my available budget which already included the cost of fuel and insurance.

The challenge for most sport and recreation programmers is that most of the costs of participation lies outside of your control; but parents and participants complain to you about the cost of participation. The answer lies in helping educate potential participants about the total costs and not just reducing your program fees. Your effort is likely just a drop in the overall bucket anyway. As this article points out there are ways to save. Helping parents or participants afford the total costs of participation is likely to be a better strategy.
