Umpiring softball & baseball is a family affair

MUSKEGON, Mich. (WZZM) -- Quite an impressive golden anniversary just wrapped up this spring in Muskegon. Ralph Burr celebrated his 50th year of umpiring area softball and baseball games.

The last 20 years have been very special for Ralph because he's been able to umpire alongside his daughter Jackie. Both Ralph and Jackie Burr were honored earlier this year by the Michigan High School Athletic Association for their milestone years of service as high school officials.

Ralph's son Jeff Burr has also officiated games with his father at various times over the past 36 years. Alongside his officiating duties, he's also volunteered his time as a coach and longtime caretaker of Sheldon Field in Muskegon.

Ralph says he wants his kids to spread his ashes at Sheldon Field when he passes.

Five decades won't be the end of the line for Ralph. The 76-year old says he will return for another tour of duty around the Muskegon area softball diamonds next year. And his daughter Jackie will right by his side for her 21st season.

Ralph, Jackie, his two sons and his grandson have officiated for a combined 142 years in the Muskegon area.
